State Health Director Encourages Good Dental Hygiene
Having good hygiene sounds basic, but it plays an important role in public health. That was the main topic of discussion at the Oral Health Care Conference in Springfield today. It was hosted by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Speakers presented information about the impact of the Affordable Healthcare Act on oral health access and the impact of sugary drinks on oral health.
"It's kind of like the gateway to the body," Dr. Lamar Hasbrouck, the Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, said. "We can see a lot of evidence of systemic conditions from an immune depressed state. We can see evidence of cancer and other chronic diseases through the mouth."
Dr. Hasbrouck is also encouraging Illinois residents to get a flu shot. With regards to the meningitis outbreak, he's reminding people: if you had an injectable steroid recently and are concerned, you should reach out to your healthcare provider.
