U of I Honors LED Inventor
The University of Illinois is honoring one of its most famous scientists. Nick Holonyak Jr. invented the first Light Emitting Diode 50 years ago. You know the invention better as an LED.
The invention paved the way for digital clocks, CDs, and fiber optic communication networks.
Holonyak called the invention "the ultimate lamp." He is currently working with a U of I professor on a high-speed transistor laser.
