Illinois Recieved Steroid Linked to Meningitis
Federal health officials say Illinois is one of 23 states that received shipments of a steroid linked to a deadly meningitis outbreak. But so far, no one here has fallen ill.
Nationwide, 35 people have contracted meningitis, and five of them have died. They all received steroid injections, mostly for back pain.
The drug was made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts. It shut down operations and recalled the medication last week.
The type of meningitis involved cannot be spread from person to person.
Investigators are still trying to confirm the source of the infection.
