Illinois Schools Rank Low in Civics Education

Students are used to state-wide tests including mathematics, science, and reading, but a new report by Tuft University shows Illinois schools are weak on civics.

Illinois schools ranked very low when it came to educating students in government, law and related topics. Research from Tuft University shows the two-year requirement of social studies or civics classes is not enough for high school students.

Steve Welch, social studies teacher, thinks different. "I think so I think we do a really good job at providing opportunities for awareness not only in current events but practical matters such as law related education and election information as well, Welch says.

Welch believes the students are receiving enough information on politics to be able to vote in November's election. "Once a week we go to the computer lab to work on a news analysis which gives the student an opportunity to do a little research, says Welch."

After registering thousands of people to vote, including high school students, Welch knows the importance of giving young minds the opportunity to form their own opinions on local government. "They have a chance to look at issues that are discussed in class as well. It's important that the students understand that they have an opportunity not only for empowerment, but to demonstrate the fact that they are 18 and they are of adult age once they register to vote, says Welch."

Parents also see the need for this type of education in classrooms.
"Know that math and science is emphasized but social studies, everything,  i think is important. The more well rounded one is in all these subject, the more better off you're going to be," says Barry Locher.

Steve Welch posts links to different websites on his teacher website, the information is available for students to browse through and find out more information on local races and issues.

The State of Illinois requires all students be able to pass the Constitutional Test before they can graduate from high school.
