IDHS Hosts Job Fair
A job fair on the state fairgrounds today attracted hundreds of applicants. But this was more than just the typical job fair.
The Illinois Department of Human Services teamed up with the Division of Rehabilitation Services to host a combined job fair and disabilities expo.
For the first hour, the event was open to only those with disabilities and military veterans. Afterwards, it opened to the public.
While finding a job in this economy can be a struggle for anyone, organizers said it's especially difficult for those with disabilities.
"It's an extreme challenge, and it varies from employer to employer," job fair coordinator Herb Earl said. "Some employees are really reluctant to hire people with disabilities because they don't want to take a chance or they don't think they're up to doing the job."
But Earl adds some employers prefer to hire people with disabilities because of the potential tax incentives.
The job fair and expo attracted several employers from around the area, as well as education institutions, home-based business, and volunteer opportunities.
Services and accessible equipment were also made available for those with disabilities.
