Voter Registration Deadline Nears
If you plan to cast your ballot next month, and you're not already registered to vote, you have only a couple of days left.
The voter registration deadline is Tuesday, October 9. The Sangamon County election office will be closed Monday because it's Columbus Day.
However, there is a grace period that will stretch until the Saturday before the election, which is November 3rd.
"During that grace period, voters who didn't get registered in time can still come to our office and get registered," said Stacey Kern, the director of elections for Sangamon County. "The only difference is they'll have to cast their ballot at the same time, rather than on election day."
When registering, you will need to bring two forms of identification; one has to have your current address.
Unions are pushing to get workers to the polls. According to the AFL-CIO, 65,000 union workers in Illinois have registered this year.
"We have seen an increase in our registration records coming in, but it is typical every four years with a big presidential election," Kern said. "We always get a big influx of registrations."
You don't have to wait until election day to cast your vote. Early voting is underway at the Sangamon County election office. In addition to weekdays, it will be open Saturdays from 8:30 am until noon prior to the election on November 6.
