Decatur School District Breaks Ground On School Upgrades
The renovation project at Decatur's MacArthur High School is officially underway after Wednesday's groundbreaking ceremony hosted by the school.
The school will eventually get a new gym, auditorium, cafeteria, library, renovated classrooms with new technology, and new security. Eisenhower High School in Decatur is also undergoing the same renovations.
"The environment in which kids are learning in is critically important. You can learn better, you have better facilities, teachers can teach better when they have better facilities and resources to help them teach in a 21st century way," says Gloria Davis, superintendent of the Decatur School District.
A county-wide tax referendum is paying for the projects, which are estimated to cost $76 million. Other schools in Macon county are also undergoing construction projects of their own.
While construction is going on at Eisenhower High School, students will be shifted to Steven Decatur Middle School. Construction at MacArthur won't start until the Eisenhower project is finished. Students at MacArthur will also attend Steven Decatur Middle School during construction.
Both projects are expected to take a year and a half to complete.
