Lanphier Students Protest

Some Lanphier High School students spent the day protesting the move of their Assistant Principal to another District 186 school.

Kelly Wickham is taking over for Kerry Borders, as Assistant Principal at Jefferson Middle School. The students say pulling their favorite guidance councillor out of their school, without any student input, just isn't fair.

So they taped their mouths, and made up signs, to show just how they feel. A message they hope gets through to school administrators.

"'It wasn't by her choice, and it kinda upset us. It's almost like the last straw." says Lanphier Sophomore Marlena Roate. "We feel like we don't have a voice and so the only way we can get that across is by protesting."

A district spokesperson refused to discuss personnel matters concerning Wickham on camera. The move still has to be voted on by the school board at tonight's meeting, which begins at 6:30 P.M., in the district office on Monroe.

Funeral services set for Chicago school official
November 20, 2009 17:24 EST

CHICAGO (AP) -- Funeral services have been set for former Chicago Board of Education President Michael Scott.

Visitation and a private service will be Saturday at Holy Family Church in Chicago. A public memorial will be Sunday at the Chicago campus of the University of Illinois.

Scott's body was found earlier this week partially submerged in the Chicago River. A .380-caliber handgun was nearby.

The Cook County medical examiner's office has ruled the 60-year-old's death a suicide. But a group of community activists have said they don't believe Scott killed himself.

Chicago police continued their investigation, but haven't found evidence Scott was the victim of a crime.

Scott, who's been called lifelong public servant, was appointed to the school board three times.
