Judge denies Sheley request for special prosecutor
July 31, 2010 19:30 EDT
GALESBURG, Ill. (AP) -- An Illinois man suspected of killing eight people in two states won't be getting a special prosecutor in his case in Knox County.
An attorney for alleged spree killer Nicholas Sheley had requested the special prosecutor to deal with certain issues in the case.
Knox County Judge James Stewart denied the request in a hearing Friday.
The judge has ordered that Sheley's defense can request testing or services without the prosecution's knowledge or presence.
Defense attorney Jeremy Karlin said a special prosecutor was needed because a party to the orders wasn't complying with them.
Sheley is suspected of killing eight people in Illinois and Missouri.
He's to be tried next year in the death of 65-year-old Ronald Randall of Galesburg.
