Man convicted of throwing woman off bridge
March 10, 2010 21:47 EST
ST. CHARLES, Ill. (AP) -- A Kane County jury has convicted an Aurora man of attempted murder for throwing his former girlfriend into the Fox River from a bridge.
Jurors deliberated about two hours Wednesday before finding 35-year-old Jonathan Zinke guilty of attempted murder and aggravated battery in the Nov. 29, 2008 incident. Zinke faces from six to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced May 13.
Assistant Kane County State's Attorney Scott Schwertley said Zinke threw the woman off the bridge after she said she was ending their relationship. The woman fell 25 feet into the river.
Public Defender Julia Yetter said both Zinke and the woman had been drinking heavily, and the woman had also been using cocaine. Yetter argued that the woman's memory of what happened may not be correct.
