March 18, 2010 16:35 EDT
MONMOUTH, Ill. (AP) -- A 56-year-old Monmouth man has pleaded not guilty in the killing a 3-year-old girl more than 11 years ago.
Tommy Richardson appeared at his arraignment Thursday in Warren County Circuit Court. He faces two counts of first degree murder in the June 1998 death of Kayla Richardson.
Prosecutors say investigators believe the girl died of suffocation.
In court, Richardson also asked for a trial by jury. A pre-trial hearing is set for May 25.
Richardson remains in custody at Warren County Jail on $750,000 bond.
He was arrested in February after he was indicted by a grand jury.
