Ill. metal invader didn't come from airplane
March 13, 2010 19:21 EST

CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- Police say a 3 1/2-pound piece of metal that fell through the roof of a suburban Chicago home didn't come from an airplane.

Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said the piece came from a machine used by a nearby landscaping business.

He says the machine can grind asphalt and spins at 2,200 rpm.

No one was hurt when the object flew into the home Friday.

The home's owner, who wasn't there at the time, says it bore through every floor of his house to land in the bathroom.

He initially thought the piece came from a passing aircraft and contacted the Federal Aviation Administration.

FAA spokesman Tony Molinaro says the agency agrees with police about the item's origin.
