Body scanner debuts at O'Hare
March 15, 2010 08:09 EDT

CHICAGO (AP) -- A full-body scanner is making its debut at Chicago's largest airport.

The federal Transportation Security Administration is giving the public a peek at the technology at O'Hare International Airport on Monday.

It's one of 150 bought with federal stimulus money for airports around the country.

Demand for the devices that can effectively see through clothes for hidden weapons rose after an attempted airplane bombing on Christmas.

But some complain the machines violate a passenger's privacy, and some critics denounce the screening as a "virtual strip search.

The TSA says the demonstration in Chicago will show the steps taken to ensure privacy is protected.
