Ed Board Discusses Regional Office Consolidation
Discussion is underway to determine how to consolidate the state's 44 regional offices of education.
Under a law signed by Gov. Pat Quinn, each offices is required to represent at least 61,000 residents. That means nine offices around the state will close.
Sangamon County Regional School Superintendent Jeff Vose said Menard County contacted him about merging the education offices.
If the two counties were to join together, Vose said he would hire one or two more employees to inspect schools and help with GED testing and training.
"It's our goal to get this taken care of and work collectively with educators in all of our areas, and county boards, to come to a resolution and more forward," Vose said.
The consolidation would require approval of both the Sangamon and Menard county boards. The Illinois State Board of Education will step in to consolidate the offices if the regional school superintendents aren't able to draw up an agreement by next year.
