Quinn, Mexican Governor Sign Education Agreement
Gov. Pat Quinn is traveling around the state today, along with a governor from Mexico. The pair stopped by Springfield to sign a new collaboration.
The agreement is a memorandum of understanding between the University of Illinois and the National Autonomous University of Mexico.
According to Robert Hauser, a dean of the University of Illinois, the pact will allow the two universities to share the expertise and resources. Hauser added similar agreements have positively affected health research, environmental issues, and especially agriculture.
"Governor Avila, who is with us here today, has come, with a delegation, on behalf of something very important," Quinn said. "Agriculture, feeding the people. Very, very important to all of us, in both of our countries, and on planet Earth."
The governor's office noted Mexico is Illinois' second-largest trading partner. Since 2012, Mexico has purchased $1.9 billion in agricultural products. Last year, Quinn visited Mexico on a trade mission to try to increase that number.
Before their trip to Springfield, the two governors laid a wreath at the statue of Benito Juarez in Chicago.
After signing the agreement, both governors attended a short play based on a meeting between president-elect Abraham Lincoln and an envoy of then-Mexican president Benito Juarez.
