Glenwood Intermediate Getting New Lunch Menu
The cafeterias in Chatham schools are buzzing with excitement after their school district partnered up with genHkids to create the freshest and healthiest lunchtime menu options for their students.
"The USDA guidelines are making, requiring, school districts to have a healthier lunch," Assistant Superintendent Jill Larson said. "There will be a calorie cap, and so it will be more fresh, real, and made from scratch."
The new program, titled C4 (Chefs-Creating-Cafeteria-Classrooms), is designed to provide nutrition education not only for the students and staff, but the parents as well.
"The cafeteria should be an extension of our classroom environment," GenHkids founder Kemia Sarrof said. "It should be a place the children are learning what types of foods they should be eating. We can retrain their taste buds to recognize fresh nutritive, nutrient-dense meals and calories."
The new menu is adding more fruits and veggies and getting rid of the high calorie sweets and treats, which Larson says will be a great start for students and families towards a healthier lifestyle.
"That is the hope that it will reduce childhood obesity, and really we want our children to be able to take those skills into life and eat and have better choices when they're eating," Larson said.
